【 The meaning of the poem 】
(Poem by Calligrapher Kiyomi Ueno)
Miho no Matsubara is a place of breathtaking beauty where Mount Fuji can be seen across the coastal pine grove. Designated Japan’s first Scenic Spot in 1922, it is also famous as the setting for the “Hagoromo Legend,” depicting the encounter between a celestial maiden and a local fisherman. When I visited Miho no Matsubara, a refreshing spring breeze was blowing, and I felt
a happiness as if a celestial maiden had descended, prompting me to compose this poem. Katsushika Hokusai also left behind paintings of Miho no Matsubara. The combination of Mount Fuji, representing Japan, and the celestial maiden is simply too beautiful. When people see beautiful things, they become happy. Though Mount Fuji is not depicted in this work, in my mind, I can see it clearly.
